MENOMONIE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point football team (2-5, 1-3) forced overtime despite playing from behind most of the game in an eventual 38-31 loss in double overtime at UW-Stout (2-5, 1-3) on Saturday.
Senior quarterback
Matt Urmanski (Edgar, Wis./Edgar) threw for three touchdowns and 266 yard by completing 21 of 32 passes. He connected with
Devin Baldridge (Gilberts, Ill./Hampshire) eight times for 67 yards and a touchdown.
Josh Cisewski (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) caught two passes for 94 yards and a TD.
Nevada Laabs (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) had 12 tackles, including a sack, and made his first career interception.
Kameron Kryzanski (Thorp, Wis./Thorp) topped the Pointers with 14 tackles and
Berkley Corvino (Weston, Wis./DC Everest) had a team-high eight solo tackles with 12 total.
The Blue Devils took the opening drive 77 yards for a 7-0 lead. On the ensuing kickoff,
Donovan Lucas (Milwaukee, Wis./Brown Deer) took it to the house from 78 yards to quickly even the game at 7-all.
OJ James (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) made his second interception in as many games to halt Stout next drive at the one yard line. After a three-and-out, the Blue Devils regained the lead on an 11-play, 40 yard drive to hold a 14-7 edge after one.
In the second quarter, Urmanski connected with Cisewski on an 83-yard touchdown, his first career reception. After Laabs picked off a pass on the next Blue Devils' possession, Urmanski completed a 16-yard touchdown pass to
Jonte Webb (Marinette, Wis./Marinette) as the Pointers took a 20-14 lead.
The lead lasted just 10 plays as the Blue Devils found the end zone again to retake the lead, 21-20. On the final drive of the half,
Victor Ponterio (Melrose, Wis./Melrose-Mindoro) kicked a field goal to give UWSP a 23-21 advantage at the break.
The Blue Devils missed a field goal in the third quarter, the only scoring threat by either team. Midway through the fourth, Stout was successful on a field goal to gain a 24-23 lead.
The Pointers responded with a six-play 59-yard drive capped by a Baldridge touchdown catch for 22 yards as UWSP took a 31-24 lead with 4:35 remaining. It took the Blue Devils just five plays to score and tie the game at 31-31.
In the first overtime, Urmanski threw and interception, but the UWSP defense held Stout to a field goal attempt that was missed from 29 yards out. In the second overtime, the Blue Devils scored on the fourth play and recovered a fumble to take the win.
The Pointers return home on Saturday (Nov. 2) for a 1:00 p.m. game against UW-Eau Claire in the annual Spud Bowl.
