STEVENS POINT, Wis. –
April Gehl (Hilbert, Wis./Hilbert) and
Tara Emme (St. Nazianz, Wis./Valders) stole the show in the UW-Stevens Point volleyball team's Senior Night, but the Pointers fell to UW-Eau Claire in an intense four-set match.
Gehl had a double-double with 28 kills and 23 digs. Emme added 12 kills as the duo played their final regular season home match for the Pointers (20-7, 3-2).
Ellie Adams (Racine, Wis./William Horlick) had 49 assists and 14 digs to record a double-double for UWSP, while
Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson),
Kelsie Belfiori (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) and
Megan Lau (Potter, Wis./Hilbert) were in double figures with 19 digs, 16 digs and 11 kills, respectively.
In a seesaw first set, the Pointers averted seven UWEC set points before the Blugolds (13-8, 3-2) earned a thrilling 37-35 victory. Gehl had 11 kills for UWSP in the first set.
Adams had a pair of early kills as the Pointers opened a 7-1 lead to begin the second set. After the Pointers led 16-9, the Blugolds used an 11-3 run to take a 20-19 edge and the momentum propelled UWEC to a 25-21 win in set two.
Gehl stepped up again for UWSP late in the third set as she recorded kills on the Pointers final four points in a 26-24 set win. Gehl had three kills as the Pointers opened a 6-1 lead in the fourth set, but the Blugolds rallied back for a 25-20 win to take the match.
UWSP heads to La Crosse on Wednesday (Oct. 23) to face the Eagles in a 7:00 p.m. conference match.
