Gehl’s 17th Double-Double Aids Pointers to Sweep of IWU

WHITEWATER, Wis. – Senor April Gehl (Hilbert, Wis./Hilbert) racked up her 17th double-double of the season as the UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (18-5) swept Illinois Wesleyan (3-15) by scores of 25-13, 25-20 and 25-21 in day one action at the Dig Panici Classic.

Gehl led all players with 15 kills and had a game-high 15 digs to record her seven-straight double-double.  She also served up three aces to tie for the team lead.

Ellie Adams (Racine, Wis./William Horlick) piled up 35 assists in the win, her seventh-straight match with 30 or more assists.

Megan Lau (Potter, Wis./Hilbert) and Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) were in double figures with 11 kills and 14 digs, respectively.

Maddie Lawson (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) had three of her seven blocks early as the Pointers jumped ahead 15-6 on their way to an easy set one victory.  Kills by Gehl, Hailey Jarr (Bloomer, Wis./Bloomer), Adams and Tara Emme (St. Nazianz, Wis./Valders) helped the Pointers use a 7-1 surge to create separation in a set two win.

Emme and Lawson each had a pair of kills in a 9-1 spurt in the third set and UWSP overtook the lead and a pair of kills by Gehl late broke a 19-19 tie as the Pointers prevailed in the third set for the sweep.

UWSP faces Millikin and Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday (Oct. 12) at 12:30 and 3:00 p.m. to close out the Dig Panici Classic.
