OSHKOSH, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (5-9, 1-2) hung with No. 15 UW-Oshkosh (13-1, 3-0) for the first half, but the Titans pulled away for a 66-43 win over UWSP on Wednesday.
Sophomore
Bailee Collins (Milton, Wis./Milton) led UWSP in scoring for the second-straight game. She had a game-high 19 points and narrowly missed another double-double with nine rebounds.
Fellow sophomore
Brooke Geier (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) added nine points with five rebounds.
Kellan Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) had a game-high six assists for the Pointers.
Collins and
Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) scored on consecutive possessions early as the Pointers took a 4-3 lead, the only advantage of the game for UWSP. Geier snapped a 7-0 UWO run, but the Pointers were behind 12-8 after the first quarter.
Schmidt nailed a three just under three minutes into the second quarter. Geier and Collins combined for the next 13 UWSP points and the Pointers were down just two at the half, 26-24.
Collins scored in the opening minute of the third quarter to tie the game at 26-26. The Titans reeled off 20 of the next 22 points to put the game away. Collins scored the final five points of the quarter for the Pointers, but the deficit was 46-33 heading to the fourth.
The first four points by UWSP were scored by Collins to begin the fourth quarter.
Taylor Greenheck (Sauk Prairie, Wis./Sauk Prairie) scored with 7:29 to go, but the final four UWSP points came at the free throw line to close out the game.
The Pointers will play UW-Eau Claire at home on Saturday (Jan. 12). Tip-off at Berg Gym is slated for 3:00 p.m. It is Youth Day at Berg on Saturday as youth eighth grade and younger get in free with a paid adult.
