STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (5-10, 1-3) couldn't break the UW-Eau Claire (12-3, 3-1) press and fell to the visiting Blugolds, 79-54.
Sophomore
Taylor Greenheck (Sauk Prairie, Wis./Sauk Prairie) led the Pointers in scoring with 15 points. She hit two of the Pointers' six three-pointers in the game.
Fellow sophomore
Brooke Geier (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) had two three-point makes and eight points. She topped the team with six rebounds. Freshman
Erin Nyhus (Brodhead, Wis./Brodhead) and sophomore
Erin Moran (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) had seven points apiece.
Bailee Collins (Milton, Wis./Milton) got UWSP on the board in the opening minute, but UWSP trailed 3-2. Collins scored again, but the Blugolds pushed the lead to 10-4. A Geier triple was followed by an 8-0 spurt by UWEC to take a 18-7 lead.
Jordyn Ellis (Winneconne, Wis./Winneconne) and Greenheck each scored a bucket late, but UWSP was down 24-12 after one.
Greenheck nailed her first three to begin the second. UWEC again scored eight-straight for a 32-15 advantage.
Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) scored four points and Nyhus buried a three, but the Pointers trailed 42-27 at the half.
Kellan Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) and Collins each scored early in the third, but yet another run by the Blugolds pushed the deficit to 60-31. Nyhus and Geier hit threes down the stretch as the Pointers were behind, 66-40, heading to the fourth.
Jessica Slowik (Elcho, Wis./Elcho) made the first field gold of the fourth with 4:22 to go, but it was a 75-46 game at that point. Greenheck drilled a three in the closing seconds as the remainder of the Pointers' points in the fourth came from the free throw line.
The Pointers head out on a two-game road trip beginning with a visit to UW-La Crosse on Wednesday (Jan. 16) at 7:00 p.m.
