STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 9 UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (10-3, 2-1) suffered its first conference loss as visiting No. 5 UW-Oshkosh (13-1, 3-0) used a 12-0 first-half run to take a 78-68 victory from the Pointers.
Senior
Canon O'Heron (Bangor, Wis./Bangor) led a quartet of Pointers in double figures with a game-high 20 points. Fellow senior
Ethan Bublitz (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) had his first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Nate Dodge (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) poured in 18 points and
Drew Fredrickson (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) added 10. The Pointers shot just 24 percent from three-point range while the Titans hit 12-of-24 from behind the arc.
Bublitz scored UWSP's first three points as the Pointers led 3-2 early. O'Heron completed an and-one adding the next five UWSP points. As the midpoint of the half arrived, O'Heron scored six-straight for the Pointers knotting the game at 18-18.
Bublitz drained a three to tie the game at 21-21, but four-straight three-point makes gave the Titans a 33-21 lead that would prove to be too big of a deficit for UWSP to overcome. Fredrickson buried a triple as the Pointers tried to climb back into the game. Dodge completed an and-one and the deficit was down to four at 33-29. Fredrickson nailed another three, but UWSP trailed 37-32 at the half.
O'Heron began the scoring in the second half with four early points. Dodge drilled a three, but the Titans still led, 46-41. Dodge scored again midway through the half as the Pointers remained close at 55-48.
Another Dodge triple at the 4:31 mark made it a 70-60 game. O'Heron scored two late in the game, but the deficit was too much in the defeat.
UWSP will travel to Eau Claire on Saturday (Jan. 12) to play the Blugolds at 5:00 p.m.
