EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – Senior
Canon O'Heron (Bangor, Wis./Bangor) scored 19 of his game-high 23 points in the second half as the No. 9 UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (11-3, 3-1) took care of business with a 68-53 win at UW-Eau Claire (9-6, 2-2) on Saturday.
O'Heron grabbed 10 rebounds as well for his double-double of the year. He shot 10-for-15 from the field in the game, including 8-of-10 in the second half.
Drew Fredrickson (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) and
Nate Dodge (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) each had 11 points.
Ethan Bublitz (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) added 10 points with five rebounds and three assists.
Fredrickson nailed a three in the opening minute and Bublitz added a triple for a 6-5 lead early.
Brett Tauber (Madison, Wis./Memorial) made layups on back-to-back possessions for a 10-5 advantage. Dodge scored five-straight UWSP points near the middle of the half as the Pointers regained the lead at 17-15.
Dodge nailed another from behind the arc as the Pointers and Blugolds traded baskets. Bublitz hit 3-of-4 free throws in the finals minutes, but UWSP trailed 30-29 at the break.
Just under three minutes into the second half, O'Heron completed an and-one for a 34-33 lead. He scored 12-straight for UWSP as the lead grew to 42-34.
Garrett Nelson (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) completed an and-one to spark an 11-0 run as the Pointers went ahead 53-37 with 9:00 remaining.
Fredrickson buried a pair of threes as the lead ballooned to 18 at 66-48 with 2:22 remaining. Two free throws in the final minute by Bublitz sealed the win for UWSP.
The Pointers return home for a two-game homestand beginning on Wednesday (Jan. 16) against UW-La Crosse. Tip-off at Bennett Court at Quandt Fieldhouse is slated for 7:00 p.m. The first 750 fans with get the second set of trading cards featuring O'Heron.
