STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (5-8, 1-1) erased a 10-point halftime deficit behind double-doubles by
Amber Baehman (Plainfield, Wis. /Tri-County) and
Bailee Collins (Milton, Wis./Milton) for a 67-62 win over UW-River Falls (6-7, 0-2).
Collins recorded a career-high 30 points and snagged 11 boards, also a career-best, to register her first double-double as a Pointer.
Baehman notched her fourth double-double of the year with 14 points and a career-high 16 rebounds.
Kellan Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) was also in double-figures scoring with 13 points. She tied
Brooke Geier (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) for the team lead with five assists each.
Schmidt got the Pointers on the board with the opening possession and UWSP took an early 6-2 lead. A Schmidt free throw nearly four minutes in snapped a 7-0 run by UWRF. Collins put up six points late in the quarter, but UWSP trailed 15-13 after one.
Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) completed an and-one as the Pointers regained the lead at 17-15. Collins made a layup in the midst of an 11-2 run by the Falcons. Schmidt scored three points in the quarter, but the Pointers trailed 33-23 at the half.
Schmidt kickstarted a six-point spurt to begin the third quarter as UWSP tried to rally. With four minutes left in the quarter, Collins completed an and-one to spark a big run by the Pointers. Baehman capped the 12-point burst with a three as UWSP pulled ahead 44-42. Back-to-back makes by Collins and Schmidt gave the Pointers a 48-47 edge heading to the fourth.
Collins scored in the opening minute of the fourth to push the lead to three. The Pointers made five free throws and the defense held up to maintain a 55-53 advantage with less than four minutes remaining. Cerrato and Baehman each recorded a bucket and UWSP made 8-of-10 free throws to solidify the victory.
The Pointers head back on the road to face UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday (Jan. 9). Tip-off at Kolf Sports Center is slated for 7:00 p.m.
