RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The No. 12 UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (10-2, 2-0) opened an early 9-2 lead and never looked back in an 88-68 win at UW-River Falls (7-6, 0-2) on Saturday.
Nate Dodge (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) led five Pointers in double figures with 29 points. He shot 6-for-8 from three-point range and 9-of-12 from the field overall.
Canon O'Heron (Bangor, Wis./Bangor) added 21 points with 10-made field goals.
Ethan Bublitz (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) hauled in a team-high eight rebounds and scored 15 points.
Drew Fredrickson (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) and
Brett Tauber (Madison, Wis./Memorial) also scored in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively, and each dished out four assists.
Four of UWSP's five starters scored early as the Pointers led 9-2 five minutes into the game. Dodge and Bublitz sandwiched a 12-4 run with a three-pointer each as the lead grew to 27-15 with 7:45 left int eh first half.
Dodge nailed another triple as UWSP hit the 30-point plateau at 7:11. Fredrickson added five points late and another Dodge three gave the Pointers a 47-31 lead at the half.
O'Heron scored in the opening minute of the second half to initiate a 12-4 run and the Pointers held the Falcons without a field goal over the first 6:24 of the period. The lead hovered around 20 the remainder of the half as UWSP cruised to the win.
The Pointers return home on Wednesday (Jan. 9) for another high-level league matchup at Bennet Court. Tip-off against UW-Oshkosh is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and the first 750 fans will received the first set of trading cards.
