EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – UW-Stevens Point women's basketball coach
Shirley Egner earned her 300th win in WIAC play as her Pointers defeated UW-Eau Claire, 88-75. The game was Egner's 800th at the helm of the Pointers and she improved her career record at UWSP to 546-253.
Freshman
Amber Baehman (Plainfield, Wis. /Tri-County) scored a career-high 26 points and recorded her sixth double-double with 10 rebounds for the Pointers (7-12, 3-5).
UWSP had three others in double figures, including a career-high 15 points from
Kellan Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton).
Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) also had 15 points and
Brooke Geier (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) added 14. Geier nearly had a double-double with nine rebounds.
UWEC (13-6, 4-4) took a 3-2 lead one minute into the game, the lone lead of the game for the Blugolds. Baehman scored the next six points as the Pointers went on an 11-0 run. Baehman nailed her first of two threes as the lead increased to 16-7. The quarter ended with Baehman hitting her second triple as UWSP went 10-for-14 from the field to double up UWEC, 32-16, after one.
Taylor Greenheck (Sauk Prairie, Wis./Sauk Prairie) opened the second quarter with a three-pointer and
Bailee Collins (Milton, Wis./Milton) scored to cap a 13-0 run spanning the quarters. Baehman and Cerrato hit back-to-back threes as the lead grew to a game-high 25 at 43-18. Geier nailed a three midway through and Baehman capped her 21-point first half with a three in the closing seconds as UWSP held a 58-35 lead at the half.
Collins snapped a 10-0 UWEC run to begin the third with a bucket at the 4:16 mark as UWSP led by 15. Geier capped the 7-0 UWSP run with a three to push the lead back to 20. Cerrato nailed a three late and the Pointers were ahead 69-54 heading to the fourth.
Erin Moran (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) drilled a three early in the fourth as the lead remained 20. The Blugolds cut the lead to seven with 1:45 remaining, but six-straight free-throw makes sealed the win.
UWSP returns to Berg Gym on Wednesday to face UW-La Crosse. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and fans have a chance to win $500 during the half-court shootout at halftime.
