Pointers Pull Ahead Early, Hand Warhawks First Loss

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 12 UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (9-2, 1-0) held visiting No. 10 UW-Whitewater (11-1, 0-1) to just 23 percent shooting in the first half and handed the Warhawks their first loss of the season, 64-51, in the conference opener on Wednesday.

Senior Drew Fredrickson (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) led all players with 20 points and had a game-high eight rebounds.  He shot 7-for-10 from the field with four makes from three-point range.  Fredrickson also added three assists to his team-leading total.

Ethan Bublitz (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) and Canon O'Heron (Bangor, Wis./Bangor) were also in double figures at 12 and 11 points, respectively.  Brett Tauber (Madison, Wis./Memorial) scored eight points and grabbed seven boards.

Nate Dodge (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) and Tauber each hit jumpers early to give UWSP a 4-0 lead.  Bublitz snapped a slow start for both teams with a layup nearly seven minute in to give the Pointers an 8-5 advantage.  Fredrickson dropped in his first three of the game to erase the lone UWW lead and spark a 10-0 run by the Pointers.

O'Heron scored seven-straight points for UWSP to end the half as the Pointers took a 25-15 advantage into the half.

Bublitz scored on the opening possession of the second half and UWSP went on an 11-4 run to push the lead to 36-19.  Bublitz nailed a three and Fredrickson made both free throws following a technical foul on UWW as the lead ballooned to 20 at 45-25.

Fredrickson hit his fourth three of the game at 7:22 as the lead remained at 20.  Bublitz again sparked a run, 8-3, late as the Pointers increased the lead to 22 with 3:14 remaining to close out the win.

The Pointers head to River Falls to face the Falcons at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday (Jan. 5).
