PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (5-12, 1-5) was out-scored 22-7 in a decisive third quarter that saw host UW-Platteville (8-9, 2-4) take down the Pointers, 75-62, on Saturday.
Junior
Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) led a trio of Pointers in double figures with 12 points. She also snagged a team-high four rebounds.
Bailee Collins (Milton, Wis./Milton) and
Amber Baehman (Plainfield, Wis. /Tri-County) each contributed 11 points.
Kellan Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) snapped a 9-0 run by the Pioneers to open the game with a bucket at the 5:22 mark of the first quarter. Cerrato followed with a three on the next possession as the Pointers tried to climb back.
Erin Nyhus (Brodhead, Wis./Brodhead) nailed a triple and Cerrato closed the quarter with her second three-pointer as UWSP was down just five, 20-15, after one.
Baehman and Cerrato combined for vie points, but by the middle of the quarter, UWP had built the lead back to 10 at 30-20. Schmidt drilled a three and Cerrato followed with her fourth from long range as UWSP got the deficit back to five at the break, 37-32.
Baehman scored a minute and a half into the third, but a 17-0 run by the Pioneers put UWSP down 24.
Taylor Greenheck (Sauk Prairie, Wis./Sauk Prairie) completed an and-one, but the deficit was 59-39 heading to the fourth.
Collins scored three and a half minutes into the fourth to snap a scoreless streak from the field and Baehman followed with a three. Back-to-back basket by Collins with just under four to play was too little too late in the road loss.
The Pointers return home on Wednesday (Jan. 23) to face UW-Stout at 7:00 p.m. UWSP students have a chance to win $500 at the game during the Marshfield Clinic Health Systems Docs vs. Dogs event at halftime.
