Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Unable to Overcome Slow Start

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (5-11, 1-4) got double-figure scoring from Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) and Bailee Collins (Milton, Wis./Milton), but it wasn't enough in a 55-46 loss at No. 23 UW-La Crosse (15-1, 4-1) on Wednesday.

Collins pulled down a team-best nine rebounds and scored 12 points.  Cerrato led all scorers with 13 points.

Kellan Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) made UWSP's first field goal nearly halfway through the first quarter after the Eagles had opened a 9-1 lead.  Cerrato made a three-pointer two minutes later and an Amber Baehman (Plainfield, Wis. /Tri-County) basket kept UWSP close as the Pointers trailed 13-9 after one.

Cerrato ended a 9-0 UWL run with a three after the Pointers went more than six minutes without scoring to begin the second quarter.  Cerrato hit another bucket later in the period, but UWSP was behind 24-18 at the half.

Schmidt scored two minutes into the third to stop a 6-0 run by UWL.  Collins scored back-to-back points for UWSP and Baehman completed an and-one as the Pointers climbed to within six at 35-29.

Taylor Greenheck (Sauk Prairie, Wis./Sauk Prairie) scored four and a half minutes into the fourth and UWSP was down just six again at 41-35.  A 7-0 run by the Eagles followed and put the game out of reach.  Cerrato scored five points down the stretch, but UWL matched each score for the win.

The Pointers travel south to face UW-Platteville on Saturday (Jan. 19).  Tip-off in Platteville is set for 3:00 p.m.
