UWSP Volleyball Falls to Elmhurst at Home on Friday

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (10-7) got double-doubles from April Gehl (Hilbert, Wis./Hilbert) and Ellie Adams (Racine, Wis./William Horlick), but visiting Elmhurst (6-8) spoiled the Pointers first match of the UW-Stevens Point Invitational II on Friday.

Gehl led all players with 12 kills and tied Adams and Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) for the team lead with 11 digs.  Adams led all players with 25 assists in the match.  Freshman Maddie Lawson (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) powered home 10 kills for UWSP.

Rachel Hein (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) opened the match with a pair of kills and Lawson gave UWSP a 4-2 lead with her first kill of the match. Later in the set, freshman Megan Lau (Potter, Wis./Hilbert) recorded a pair of kills as UWSP remained ahead, 12-9.  The Bluejays posted a 7-0 run to take a 22-17 advantage and rode the momentum to the set win.

Gehl, Hein and Lau combined for six early kills, but UWSP couldn't shake the Bluejays early. Then a 5-0 run by Elmhurst gave the visitors a 14-10 lead.  Another five-point spurt later in the set gave the Bluejays a two-set lead.

The Pointers got nine kills from five different players to open a 14-6 lead in the third set.  Kills by Gehl and Taylor Keenan (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville Area) helped to hold a 19-12 edge, but Elmhurst rallied with 12 of the next 16 points to take a 24-23 lead.  UWSP got kills from Hailey Jarr (Bloomer, Wis./Bloomer) and Lawson to set up a pair of set points, but the Bluejays rattled off three-straight points to end the match.

UWSP face Coe College and Wheaton College on Saturday in Berg Gym.  Game times are slated for 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.., respectively.
