STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (12-7) got a pair of quality wins and ended the weekend with a three-set win over Coe College (12-5) and a thrilling four-set victory over Wheaton (9-5).
Junior
April Gehl (Hilbert, Wis./Hilbert) racked up 32 kills over the two wins, topping all players in the category in both matches. She added 21 digs in the win over Wheaton for yet another double-double.
Sophomore
Ellie Adams (Racine, Wis./William Horlick) recorded a double-double in each match on Saturday. She had 24 assists and 14 digs against Coe and had a career-high 53 assists and 10 digs against the Thunder.
Freshman
Maddie Lawson (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) added 17 kills and eight blocks on the day.
Rachel Hein (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) also had a double-figure kills match with 11 against Wheaton.
UWSP 3, Coe 0 (25-10, 25-17, 25-21)
Lawson had an early kill as UWSP took a 6-1 lead. Gehl had a trio of kills and
Hailey Jarr (Bloomer, Wis./Bloomer) finished a 9-0 run with a kill to put the Pointers ahead 18-5. Later,
Megan Lau (Potter, Wis./Hilbert) and Jarr combined for three kills in a five-point spurt as UWSP rolled to a set win.
Lawson began the second set with a kill and capped a four-point run as UWSP retook the lead at 5-4. Gehl powered home a kill and served up an ace with
Rachel Hein (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) capping a 6-1 run to put UWSP up 13-9. Jarr, Lawson and Hein completed the set win with three late kills.
Gehl capped a 4-0 run as UWSP took a 10-8 lead. Later, Hein put the Pointers in front 14-12 with a kill. Gehl ended a seesaw set with three-straight kills to help UWSP sweep the match.
UWSP 3, Wheaton 1 (19-25, 25-23, 25-23, 30-28)
Lawson sandwiched a
Madyson Schroeder (Green Bay, Wis./Bayport) ace with kills as UWSP took a 5-3 lead. Gehl sparked a 4-0 run with back-to-back kills as the lead grew to 9-4. The Thunder responded with an 8-1 spurt to take control of the set and take a 1-0 lead.
Gehl powered a couple early kills, but Wheaton inched ahead 9-7. Lau buried a kill to set off an 8-2 run as the Pointers moved ahead 15-11. Lawson and Gehl had late kills as UWSP broke a 22-22 tie to even the match.
Adams, Gehl and Jarr combined for four kills as the Pointers went up 6-1 early. A 9-2 run put the Thunder ahead before Lau put down a kill to keep the set close. With Wheaton up 22-19, Lawson sparked a 5-0 run to put the Pointers at set point. Adams had the final kill to close the set win.
The Pointers trailed most of the fourth set as Wheaton leveraged a 20-14 lead. Hein and Lau put up three kills to cut the lead to three. Hein had another kill to spark a 5-1 run to tie the set at 22-22. The set teetered back-and-forth until Lawson and Hein had three-straight kills to end the match.
UWSP travels to UW-Stout on Wednesday (Sept. 26) for a conference tilt at 7:00 p.m. in Menomonie.
