STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (10-6, 0-1) got a double-double from junior
April Gehl (Hilbert, Wis./Hilbert), but visiting UW-Whitewater (10-2, 1-0) took a four-set win from the Pointers.
Gehl recorded 14 kills and 16 digs for the Pointers for her 11th double-double of the season. Freshmen
Maddie Lawson (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) and
Megan Lau (Potter, Wis./Hilbert) added eight and six kills, respectively.
Fellow freshman
Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) racked up a match-high 24 digs for the Pointers. Sophomore setter
Ellie Adams (Racine, Wis./William Horlick) led all players with 36 assists.
The Pointers fell into a 4-0 hole in the first set and three times got back within one behind kills from Gehl, Lau and
Hailey Jarr (Bloomer, Wis./Bloomer). Down to set point, UWSP rattled off a 5-0 run before the Warhawks won the set.
Kills by Gehl, Lawson and Jarr propelled UWSP to a 5-1 lead in the second set.
Jamie Schmitz (Cashton, Wis./Cashton) sparked a 5-0 mid-set run with a kill as UWSP pulled ahead 17-7. The Pointers finished the set on a 5-2 run and hit a game-high .343 in the set.
The Warhawks battled back from a 4-1 hole to take a 9-5 lead in the third. Back-to-back kills by Lawson and Adams started a 4-1 run to tie the set at 11-11. UWW used a 5-1 run to edge ahead and closed out the third set.
Gehl and Lau combined for three kills early in the fourth set, but the Warhawks moved ahead 8-7.
Rachel Hein (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) had consecutive kills, but the Warhawks responded with a 4-0 run and a 12-10 lead. UWW followed with an 8-2 spurt to seal the fourth set and the match.
The Pointers remain home for the UW-Stevens Point Invitational II this weekend. The tournament begins on Friday (Sept. 21) at 3:00 p.m. with UW-La Crosse taking on Elmhurst. UWSP plays Elmhurst in the third match of the day at 7:00 p.m.
