SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (1-3) split a pair of games on day two at the Trinity University Tournament in Texas. UWSP dropped the opening match of the day to No. 11 Trinity University (3-1) in four sets and beat Cabrini University (0-4) in straight sets in the second match.
Junior
April Gehl (Hilbert, Wis./Hilbert) recorded a double-double in both matches and led the Pointers with 22 kills and 24 digs on the day.
Rachel Hein (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) finished the day with 18 kills and
Maddie Lawson (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) led the team with six blocks.
Junior
Lisa Bedessem (Burlington, Wis./Sauk Prairie) posted 26 digs over the two matches. Sophomore
Ellie Adams (Racine, Wis./William Horlick) recorded a team-high 62 assists to lead the Pointers.
UWSP 1, #11 TU 3 (21-25, 16-25, 25-17, 17-25)
The Pointers had a 13-10 lead spreading kills between five different players in the first set before the Tigers went on a 9-1 run to pull ahead and close out the win.
The second set was point for point until Trinity scored 12 of the final 16 points to take a two-set advantage.
With the third set tied at 15,
Maddie Lawson (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) had two service aces and kills from Gehl,
Tara Emme (St. Nazianz, Wis./Valders) and Hein allowed the Pointers to go on a 10-1 run and win the set.
Service aces from the Tigers led to an early 4-1 lead, but mid-set kills by Gehl and Emme brought the Pointers within two. The Tigers put together a 5-0 run to finish the fourth set.
UWSP 3, CU 0 (27-25, 32-30, 25-23)
The Pointers battled back from being down 18-23 in the first set with kills from Emme, Hein and Gehl to tie the set at 23-all before pulling out the 27-25 win.
The second set was back-and-forth the entire way, but back-to-back kills by Adams allowed UWSP to go up 30-29. Emme closed out the 32-30 win on a kill.
The Pointers opened the third set with kills by Adams and
Hailey Jarr (Bloomer, Wis./Bloomer).
Shannah Carter (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) went on a serving run with kills by Jarr and Hein and a service ace to take a 16-9 advantage. UWSP fell behind 22-23 before two error from the Cavaliers and a kill by Jarr closed out the third set to sweep Cabrini.
The Pointers finished the tournament in fourth place and Gehl was named to the All-Tournament Team.
UWSP returns home on Wednesday (Sept. 5) for the home opener against Lakeland at 7:00 p.m.
