STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Junior
April Gehl (Hilbert, Wis./Hilbert) recorded her third-straight double-double as the UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (2-3) swept visiting Lakeland University (4-1) in the home opener on Wednesday night.
Gehl racked up a season-best 21 kills and tied for the team-high with 16 digs. Fellow junior
Lisa Bedessem (Burlington, Wis./Sauk Prairie) also had 16 digs in the win.
Sophomore
Ellie Adams (Racine, Wis./William Horlick) had 37 of the Pointers' 44 assists in the match. Freshman
Maddie Lawson (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) topped the squad with seven blocks.
The first set swayed in UWSP's favor with a 4-0 run that included a kill by Gehl for a 15-10 advantage. The Pointers secured the final five points of the set victory, capped by a service ace by
Ali Zamzow (Merrill, Wis./Merrill).
Gehl began a 5-0 spurt with a pair of kills to open the second set as UWSP went ahead 6-1.
Tara Emme (St. Nazianz, Wis./Valders) and
Jamie Schmitz (Cashton, Wis./Cashton) each had a pair of kills in an 8-1 run to put the Pointers up 16-6. Gehl had four kills and an ace as UWSP closed out the second set.
The third set began with Gehl rocking four kills in an 8-1 run. The Muskies got back in the set, closing to within 16-15, but Gehl closed out the straight-set win with three kills.
UWSP is home all weekend for the UW-Stevens Point Invitational beginning with a 3:00 p.m. match on Friday against Saint Mary's.
