SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (0-2) suffered a pair of straight-set defeats on opening day at the Trinity University Tournament in Texas. In the opening match of the day, UWSP fell to No. 7 Gustavus Adolphus (1-0) in three sets and lost to Aurora (1-0) in the second match in straight sets.

April Gehl (Hilbert, Wis./Hilbert) led the Pointers with 22 kills and 22 digs on the day. She also posted four blocks, tying sophomore
Hailey Jarr (Bloomer, Wis./Bloomer) for the team lead on the day.

Lisa Bedessem (Burlington, Wis./Sauk Prairie) posted 21 digs over the two matches. Sophomore
Ellie Adams (Racine, Wis./William Horlick) recorded 43 assists to lead UWSP.

Early kills by Gehl and
Tara Emme (St. Nazianz, Wis./Valders) allowed UWSP to take a 4-1 advantage. The Pointers held an edge until GAC tied the set at 12-all. Gehl powered a couple more kills to keep UWSP close, but a 5-1 run late sealed the set win for GAC.
Kills by Adams and
Rachel Hein (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) helped UWSP inch ahead 6-5, but the Gusties put together a 13-2 run to take the second set.
Mid-set kills by Gehl kept UWSP close, but the Pointers trailed from start to finish in the third set.
UWSP 0, AU 3 (21-25, 19-25, 21-25)
Gehl again provided some early offense and UWSP forced the Spartans into four errors to take an 8-3 lead. Following an 18-18 tie, AU scored seven of the final 10 points to eek out set one.
Gehl, Emme and Jarr combined for four kills as the Pointers took a 7-5 lead. The Spartans responded with an 8-2 run took control in the second set. Kills by
Taylor Keenan (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville Area) and Hein kept UWSP within striking distance.
Jarr had two early kills in the third set, but the Spartans took a 10-7 lead. The Pointers got a pair of kills from Gehl and Hein to move ahead 14-13. Late kills by Gehl kept UWSP close, but AU prevailed for the sweep.
The Pointers wrap up the trip to Texas against No. 11 Trinity at 10 a.m. and play Cabrini at 4:00 p.m. to close out opening weekend.
