Pair of Four-Run Innings Propel Pointers to Split at CUW

MEQUON, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point Baseball team (23-9) split a pair of games against Concordia (Wis.). In the opening game, CUW (20-14) pulled out the walk-off win, 3-2. Two four-run innings propelled the Pointers to a 9-3 win in game two.
 
Tommy Duddleston (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle Institute) led the Pointers offense collecting three hits, one RBI and scored three runs while Bradley Hansen (Racine, Wis. /Union Grove) drove in four. Ryan Stanicek (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Catholic) plated two and scored two and Aaron Simmons (Franklin, Wis. /Franklin) added a RBI and two runs scored. Stanicek and Simmons each homered on Tuesday.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 2, CUW 3 (7 innings)
The Falcons broke the scoreless tie when they put up two runs in the fifth inning off two hits and an error.  
 
UWSP answered back by scoring single runs in the sixth and seventh to tie the game.
 
Duddleston tripled to right center to lead off the sixth inning and scored on a Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis. /West) sacrifice fly. The seventh inning saw Simmons tie the game with a solo shot over the right field wall.
 
The Falcons scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly for the walk-off win in the bottom of the seventh.
 
Drew Spaeth (Stratford, Wis./Stratford) tossed a complete game and struck out seven.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 9, CUW 3 (7 innings)
The Pointers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Stanicek led the game off with a walk and scored on Duddleston's RBI double to left center. Simmons was then hit by pitch and a fielding error allowed Duddleston to score the Pointer's second run. With the bases loaded, Hansen doubled down the right field line increasing the lead to 4-0.
 
CUW got a run back in the second inning on a walk, a double and a sacrifice fly.
 
The Falcons cut the lead in half off a solo home run in the fifth inning, making the game 4-2.
 
UWSP responded with a run of their own in the next frame. Kyle Mrozinski (Ashwaubenon, Wis./Ashwaubenon) walked to lead off, stole second and scored when Lucas Luedtke (River Falls, Wis./River Falls ) doubled to right field.
 
The Pointers offense exploded in the top of the seventh. A leadoff single by Christian Zamudio (Kenosha, Wis. /Tremper) and a home run from Stanicek plated two quick runs. Duddleston and Nelson followed with a walk and a hit by pitch and advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. Duddleston drove in a run on a ground out. Simmons and Luedtke walked to load the bases and Hansen drew the third walk in a row, easily scoring the Pointers' fourth run of the inning for a 9-2 lead.
 
The Falcons' last effort in the bottom of the seventh was stopped short, only scoring one run on one hit.
 
Pointers pitcher Zach Miller earned the win, scattering three hits over 4.0 innings pitched. Beau Zeihen (Portage, Wis./Portage) pitched the final 3.0 innings to earn the save.
 
UWSP will face No. 2 UW-Whitewater on Friday (May 4) at 1:00 p.m. with the WIAC regular season title on the line.
