Erickson, Mulzer Deal Gems in Sweep of Scarlet Hawks

STEVENS POINT, Wis. - After an impressive outing for the Pointers in day one of the series against Illinois Tech, the Pointers finished off the series sweep of the Scarlet Hawks on Sunday. The Pointers won game one, 3-0, and 3-1 in the second game with serious backing from starting pitchers Cole Erikson and Nathan Mulzer (Neenah, Wis./Neenah).

Erikson earned his sixth win of the season with the complete game three-hit shutout. He struck out eight batters and did not walk a batter. In the second game, Mulzer recorded a career-best 13 strikeouts. He scattered four hits and walked two in 8.0 innings pitched.

On the offensive side, five different Pointers posted doubles: juniors Kyle Mrozinski (Ashwaubenon, Wis./Ashwaubenon) and Ryan Stanicek (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Catholic), sophomore Lucas Luedtke (River Falls, Wis./River Falls ) and freshmen Bradley Hansen (Racine, Wis. /Union Grove) and Peyton Nelson.

Stanicek also added his fourth home run of the season and third of the IIT series in game two.

Game 1 – UWSP 3, IIT 0
Erickson struck out two in the first inning to set the tone for the day.

Stanicek started the Pointers' offense with a walk after a seven pitch at bat. Tommy Duddleston (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle Institute) laid down a sacrifice bunt and advanced Stanicek to third base with some smart and speedy base running. Nelson put the ball in play to bring Stanicek home and the Pointers took an early lead, 1-0, against the Scarlet Hawks.

Hansen crushed a double down the right field line with one down in the bottom seventh inning. Neal Matson (Neillsville, Wis./Neillsville) pinch ran for Hansen and moved to third on a single by Will Iloncaie. Stanicek hit a sac fly to left field to bring Matson home. Duddleston added a single and brought Iloncaie around to score the third run for the Pointers.

Erickson completed the victory with a perfect ninth to move to 6-1 on the year.

Game 2 - UWSP 3, IIT 1
Aaron Simmons (Franklin, Wis. /Franklin) was hit by a pitch with one away in the second. Hansen reached on an error with Simmons moving to third on the play. Two batters later, Stanicek hit a double to the fence that hugged the right field line to drive in both runners for a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Stanicek extended the lead to 3-0 with a solo shot to right field.

IIT added its sole run of the day in the top of the eighth inning with a home run. Mulzer escaped a bases-loaded jam to limit the damage and keep the lead intact.

Alex Stodola (Coleman, Wis./Coleman) closed the game in the top of the ninth and by recording the 22nd strikeout of the day and earned his seventh save of the season.

The Pointers head to Mequon for a doubleheader against Concordia University on Tuesday (May 1). First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
