MENOMONIE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (11-24, 0-12) saw its skid hit 15-straight as UW-Stout (21-6, 9-3) swept the Pointers on Saturday by 11-0 and 5-2 scores.
Ashley Cohen (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South),
Alyssa Cooper (Little Suamico, Wis./Bay Port),
Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, Wis./Kaukauna) and
Lauren Luedtke (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) had two hits each on the day for UWSP. Luedtke scored a run and drove in another. Cohen scored a run as well.
Game 1 – UWSP 0, UW-Stout 11
The Blue Devils scored in each of the first four innings to build a 6-0 lead.
Averi Kanyuh (Rapid River, Wis./Rapid River) singled with one out in the first for UWSP. Cooper doubled with two out in the second and
Rachael Wakefield (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) drew a leadoff walk in the third.
Paige Allen (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) singled in the fourth, but UWSP could not break through in any of those frames.
Natalie Yahn (Wauwautosa, Wis./East) singled with two down in the sixth, but again the Pointers were held off the board.
UW-Stout scored once in the sixth and four times in the seventh to put the game away.
UWSP's last chance to break through in the bottom of the seventh began with a Cooper single.
Sydney Opdahl (Greenfield, Wis./Whitnall) doubled to put two in scoring position, but the Blue Devils got out of the jam and held the Pointers off the scoreboard in the opener.
Game 2 – UWSP 2, UW-Stout 5
UW-Stout scored twice in the opening frame for a quick 2-0 lead.
Cohen doubled with two away in the bottom of the first. Luedtke followed with an RBI single as UWSP cut the deficit in half.
The Blue Devils turned two hits in the second into a run for a 3-1 edge.
In the sixth, Cohen led off with a single. Luedtke followed with a single and Allen singled to load the bases. A wild pitch allowed a run to score, but UWSP could not push home the tying run.
UW-Stout capped the day with a two-run seventh to finish off the Pointers.
The Pointers wrap up the regular season with a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader at UW-River Falls on Sunday.
