UWSP Softball Splits with Falcons on Final Day of Regular Season

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (12-25, 1-13) ended its losing streak with a split at UW-River Falls (20-12, 5-7) on the final day of the regular season.  UWSP won game one by a 5-3 score and fell despite a valiant seventh-inning rally in game two, 7-5.

Freshman Lauren Luedtke (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) had five hits over the twin bill, including a double in each game.  She drove in three runs and scored another.

Senior Sydney Opdahl (Greenfield, Wis./Whitnall) went 3-for-4 in her career finale with a run scored.  Fellow senior Paige Allen (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) hit a two-run home run in the win.   Averi Kanyuh (Rapid River, Wis./Rapid River) concluded her career with a hit in each game on Sunday.

Game 1 – UWSP 5, UWRF 3
Payton Mix (New London, Wis./New London) drew a walk to open the bottom of the first.  Later in the inning, Luedtke hit a double to left-center to put the Pointers in front, 1-0.

In the third inning, UWRF tied the game on an unearned run, but starter Anna Palicka (Lisle, Ill./Lisle) got out of a bases-loaded jam to keep the game tied.

Ashley Cohen (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South) broke the tie in the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff solo home run, the first of her career.  Luedtke followed with a single and stole second.  Allen stepped in and blasted a two-run shot to give the Pointers a 4-1 lead.  The inning continued as Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, Wis./Kaukauna) hit a triple.  She scored on a single by Alyssa Cooper (Little Suamico, Wis./Bay Port) for a 5-1 lead.

The Falcons got two runs back in the seventh on a two-run home run, but Palicka completed the victory with her sixth strikeout of the game to end the inning.

Game 2 – UWSP 5, UWRF 7
UWRF scored a run in the first on two hits and scored again in the second on two more hits.

Maddie Durie (Appleton, Wis./East) drew a one-out walk in the fourth and advanced to scoring position on a walk to Johnson.  Cooper singled to drive in the first run of the frame.  A Falcons' error allowed UWSP to tie the game at 2-2.

UWRF hit a three-run home run in the fifth and added two more runs in the seventh to open a 7-2 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Rachael Wakefield (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) and Opdahl singled back-to-back to begin the rally.  Kanyuh singled to drive in a run.  Then with two away, Luedtke hit a two-run double to right-center, but a fly out ended the comeback attempt.

Cohen and Opdahl tied for the team lead each hitting .344 on the season.  Allen led the Pointers with three home runs and Luedtke was a perfect 13-for-13 in stolen bases on the year.  Palicka topped the squad with 94 strikeouts and six wins on the season.
