LA CROSSE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (11-22, 0-10) suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the UW-La Crosse Eagles (17-11, 4-2) on Tuesday afternoon. The Pointers were shut out in game one, 4-0, and fell in game two by a 6-1 score.
Ashley Cohen (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South) and
Payton Mix (New London, Wis./New London) had a hit each in both games of the doubleheader. Cohen's two hits were both doubles.
Averi Kanyuh (Rapid River, Wis./Rapid River) had a single in game two and scored the lone run of the day for UWSP.
Game 1 – UWSP 0, UWL 4
The Eagles scored the first run of the day in the second inning on two hits. The lead doubled in the third on a solo home run.
The Pointers got a runner aboard in each of the first four innings, but UWSP was not able to get a runner home in any of those frames.
UWL added single runs in the sixth and seventh to conclude the scoring.
Anna Palicka (Lisle, Ill./Lisle) and
Maddie Durie (Appleton, Wis./East) combined to strike out six batters in the game.
Game 2 – UWSP 1, UWL 6
The Eagles jumped in front early with a run on two hits in the top of the first.
UWSP responded in the bottom of the frame. Kanyuh led off with a single through the left side. She moved to second on a sac bunt by Mix and scored on a UWL error to tie the game at 1-1.
UWL leveraged a leadoff triple in the second inning into a go-ahead run.
Alyssa Cooper (Little Suamico, Wis./Bay Port) doubled with two away in the second, but the Pointers could not equalize.
In the third, Cohen began the frame with a double to left. She moved to third on a sac bunt, but back-to-back lineouts stranded her at third.
Paige Allen (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) hit a one-out single in the fourth and moved to second on a sac bunt, but remained there as the inning ended.
The Eagles posted a pair of runs in the fifth with three doubles in the inning. UWL scored twice more in the seventh to put the game away.
The Pointers will wrap up the regular season with games at UW-Stout on Saturday (April 28) and at UW-River Falls on Sunday (April 29) with twin bills beginning at 2:00 p.m. on both days. UWSP will be the home team in both doubleheaders.
