MADISON, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (11-20, 0-8) was on the short end of a pair of one-run games against UW-Eau Claire (16-8, 4-0) on Sunday in Madison. The Pointers fell in game one, 3-2, and in game two by a 2-1 final.
Rachael Wakefield (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) and
Sydney Opdahl (Greenfield, Wis./Whitnall) had two hits each as the Pointers mustered just 10 hits on the day. Opdahl scored a run and Wakefield had an RBI.
Game 1 – UWSP 2, UWEC 3
Ashley Cohen (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South) doubled to center to begin the game. She moved to third on a sac bunt and scored on
Payton Mix (New London, Wis./New London)'s RBI single. Two batters later,
Lauren Luedtke (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) tripled to center for a 2-0 UWSP lead.
The Blugolds got a run back in the third on a pair of singles. UWEC tied the game in the sixth on a single and a double.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Blugolds turned a leadoff walk into a walk-off win on a one-out double.
Game 2 – UWSP 1, UWEC 2
UWEC broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth on a single, walk, two double steals and asac fly for a 2-0 lead.
Opdahl led off the fifth with a double to left. Later in the inning, she scored on a groundout by Wakefield to cut the deficit in half.
In the seventh, Opdahl and Wakefield each had a single, but UWSP could not find the equalizer.
The Pointers travel to La Crosse on Tuesday (April 24) for a pair of home games against the Eagles beginning at 2:00 p.m.
