Softball Stung By Pioneers in Doubleheader Sweep in Platteville

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (11-16, 0-4) was swept by UW-Platteville (15-11, 2-4) in conference action on Friday despite being the home team in Platteville. UWSP suffered a 13-2 run-rule loss in game one and nearly bounced back in a 3-2 defeat in game two.

Ashley Cohen (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South) collected a pair of hits in each game.  In game one, she had two doubles with an RBI and a run scored.

Maddie Durie (Appleton, Wis./East) and Rachael Wakefield (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) each had a pair of hits in game two.  Wakefield also scored a run in game two.  Durie was the tough-luck loser in the circle in game even though she allowed just two hits in 5.0 innings.

Game 1 – UWSP 2, UW-Platteville 13 (5 inn.)
The Pioneers turned a two-out walk into a run in the first inning with a pair of two-out singles for a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first, UWSP got a one-out single from Payton Mix (New London, Wis./New London).  Two batters later, Cohen doubled to right to knot the game at 1-1.  Lauren Luedtke (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) followed with a triple to push the Pointers in front, 2-1.

The lead was short-lived as the Pioneers sent 10 hitters to the plate and scored seven times on six hits and a UWSP error.

UWP scored four times in the fourth and added another in the fifth to complete the scoring.  The Pointers got a double from Cohen in the fourth and another by Paige Allen (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) in the fifth, but were unable to capitalize on either extra-base hit.

Game 2 – UWSP 2, UW-Platteville 3
UWP took an early lead without the benefit of a hit.  Two walks, a wild pitch and a groundout gave the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage.

Wakefield singled and stole second with one away in the second inning. Durie followed with a single to put runners on the corners.  Becky Kurszewski tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI ground out.
The Pioneers again scored a run in the third without a hit.  A leadoff walk moved to third on consecutive stolen bases and scored on a groundout.

In the bottom of the third, Mix reached on a one-out single.  She moved to second on a single by Cohen and scored on a single up the middle by Luedtke for a 2-2 game.

A solo home run by the Pioneers in the broke the tie, but in the seventh, the Pointers had a chance to tie or take the lead.  Mix walked with one out and Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, Wis./Kaukauna) singled to left.  Cohen blooped in a single behind second to load the bases, but a line-drive double play ended the threat and the game.

Durie scattered just two hits in the circle, but issued three costly walks. Anna Palicka (Lisle, Ill./Lisle) held the Pioneers hitless over the final 2.0 innings with three strikeouts.

The Pointers return to action on Saturday with a 6:00 p.m. doubleheader against UW-Oshkosh in Madison.
