PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (11-16, 0-4) was swept by UW-Platteville (15-11, 2-4) in conference action on Friday despite being the home team in Platteville. UWSP suffered a 13-2 run-rule loss in game one and nearly bounced back in a 3-2 defeat in game two.
Ashley Cohen (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South) collected a pair of hits in each game. In game one, she had two doubles with an RBI and a run scored.
Maddie Durie (Appleton, Wis./East) and
Rachael Wakefield (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) each had a pair of hits in game two. Wakefield also scored a run in game two. Durie was the tough-luck loser in the circle in game even though she allowed just two hits in 5.0 innings.
Game 1 – UWSP 2, UW-Platteville 13 (5 inn.)
The Pioneers turned a two-out walk into a run in the first inning with a pair of two-out singles for a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first, UWSP got a one-out single from
Payton Mix (New London, Wis./New London). Two batters later, Cohen doubled to right to knot the game at 1-1.
Lauren Luedtke (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) followed with a triple to push the Pointers in front, 2-1.
The lead was short-lived as the Pioneers sent 10 hitters to the plate and scored seven times on six hits and a UWSP error.
UWP scored four times in the fourth and added another in the fifth to complete the scoring. The Pointers got a double from Cohen in the fourth and another by
Paige Allen (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) in the fifth, but were unable to capitalize on either extra-base hit.
Game 2 – UWSP 2, UW-Platteville 3
UWP took an early lead without the benefit of a hit. Two walks, a wild pitch and a groundout gave the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage.
Wakefield singled and stole second with one away in the second inning. Durie followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Becky Kurszewski tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI ground out.
The Pioneers again scored a run in the third without a hit. A leadoff walk moved to third on consecutive stolen bases and scored on a groundout.
In the bottom of the third, Mix reached on a one-out single. She moved to second on a single by Cohen and scored on a single up the middle by Luedtke for a 2-2 game.
A solo home run by the Pioneers in the broke the tie, but in the seventh, the Pointers had a chance to tie or take the lead. Mix walked with one out and
Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, Wis./Kaukauna) singled to left. Cohen blooped in a single behind second to load the bases, but a line-drive double play ended the threat and the game.
Durie scattered just two hits in the circle, but issued three costly walks.
Anna Palicka (Lisle, Ill./Lisle) held the Pioneers hitless over the final 2.0 innings with three strikeouts.
The Pointers return to action on Saturday with a 6:00 p.m. doubleheader against UW-Oshkosh in Madison.
