Softball Swept in League-Opening DH at UWW

WHITEWATER, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (11-14, 0-2) dropped both games to the UW-Whitewater (11-7, 4-0) to begin conference play. The Pointers lost game one, 9-1, in five innings and saw the Warhawks score 10 runs in the sixth inning in game two to take it, 10-2.

Payton Mix (New London, Wis./New London) hit her first home run of the season to provide the Pointers' offense in game one. Paige Allen (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) also went yard with a two-run shot in game two. Three other Pointers picked up hits in the series.

Game 1 – UWSP 1, UWW 9
The Pointers fell behind early in the first when the Warhawks scored four runs on five hits including a two-run home run.

Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, Wis./Kaukauna) began the second with a single to right.  Alyssa Cooper (Little Suamico, Wis./Bay Port) and Anna Palicka (Lisle, Ill./Lisle) drew walsk to load the bases, but the Pointers were unable to push across any runs.

UWW tacked on two more runs in the bottom half of the second inning for a 6-0 lead.

In the third inning, Mix belted a solo shot to left center putting the Pointers on the board.

The Warhawks kept adding to their lead with single runs in the third, fourth and fifth for the run-rule victory.

Game 2 – UWSP 2, UWW 10
The Pointers broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third when Rachael Wakefield (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) singled and Allen homered over the left field wall for a two-run lead.

UW-Whitewater's offense had been shut down in the first five innings of the game, but the Warhawks' bats came alive for 10 runs in the sixth inning. They loaded the bases twice and walked-off on a grand slam to end the game.

Maddie Durie (Appleton, Wis./East) pitched a solid 5.0 innings, giving up four hits and striking out two, but took the loss.

The Pointers are scheduled to play a doubleheader against UW-Platteville on Saturday (April 14).
