UWSP Softball Hangs Tough in Pair of Losses to Ranked Foes

CLERMONT, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (12-11) wrapped up its trip in Florida with losses to No. 20 St. Thomas, 8-3, and No. 8 Luther, 6-4.

Rachael Wakefield (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) collected two hits in each game as well as two RBI and three runs scored. Sydney Opdahl (Greenfield, Wis./Whitnall) had three hits and two RBI in the games. While Payton Mix (New London, Wis./New London) added two hits and a RBI. Five other Pointers contributed a hit in the losses.

Game 1 – UWSP 3, St. Thomas 8
St. Thomas got the scoring going in the bottom of the first with two runs on three hits.

UWSP cut the lead in half in the top of the third. Wakefield walked, stole second, and scored when Opdahl doubled off the wall in left field.

St. Thomas built upon its lead by adding one more run in the fourth. A leadoff single scored on an RBI double to right center.

The Pointers tied things up in the next frame. Wakefield started the two-out rally with a single. Back-to-back singles by Opdahl and Mix pulled the Pointers within one and they tied things up when Opdahl stole home as part of a double steal.

The Tommies took the lead right back scoring two runs in the bottom half of the fifth.

St. Thomas put the game out of reach for the Pointers when they plated three runs in the sixth on four hits and two UWSP errors.

Game 2 – UWSP 4, Luther 6
The Norse started fast, scoring four runs in the first on three hits as Luther batted around.

The Pointers chipped away at Luther's lead with a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Payton Mix (New London, Wis./New London) drew a one-out walk and scored on a Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, Wis./Kaukauna) double to left.

Luther put the deficit back to four runs in the second with an RBI triple.

A big second inning pulled the game back within reach for the Pointers. They scored three runs on three hits. A one-out walk by Maddie Durie (Appleton, Wis./East) and a double by Anna Palicka (Lisle, Ill./Lisle) put runners in scoring position. Wakefield singled to plate Durie and Opdahl singled Palicka's pinch runner, Katie Anderson (Pulaski, Wis./Pulaski), home. Wakefield then scored on a wild pitch.

Luther added one run in the top of the fifth by loading the bases and scoring on a fielder's choice.

The Pointers open at home on McCarty Memorial Field against St. Norbert on April 5 with a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
