Matson Doubles Twice to Lead Pointers Past Mules

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (7-4) posted eight hits from five different batters to best Colby College, 4-2, on Thursday.

Neal Matson (Neillsville, Wis./Neillsville) posted two hits, two runs, and two doubles to assist the Pointers in the win. Tommy Duddleston (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle Institute) went 3-4, recording three singles and one run.

Duddleston started the Pointers off with a single to left center in the bottom of the first and stole second. Lucas Luedtke (River Falls, Wis./River Falls ) singled to left center to plate Duddleston for a 1-0 lead.

The Mules responded with a run in the top of the third inning off a pair of hits to tie the game, 1-1.

Kyle Mrozinski (Ashwaubenon, Wis./Ashwaubenon) started the bottom of the third with a walk. Duddleston followed with a single to send Mrozinski to third. Duddleston stole second and Ryan Stanicek (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Catholic) grounded out to drive in Mrozinski for a 2-1 advantage.

Matson doubled with one away in the fourth. Two batters later, Will Iloncaie reached on an error with Matson scoring on the play.

In the sixth, Matson lead off with his second double of the game. He moved to third on a ground out by Christian Zamudio (Kenosha, Wis. /Tremper) scored on a Mrozinski single.

The Mules scored one run in the top of the ninth, but reliever Alex Stodola (Coleman, Wis./Coleman) stranded the bases loaded to end the game.

Cale Cuddie (Loyal, Wis./Loyal) earned his first win of the season with 7.0 innings pitched. He struck out five, scattered four hits, with one run and one walk allowed.

The Pointers conclude their Florida trip with another game against Colby College on Friday. The first pitch is slated for 10:00 a.m. ET.
