Softball Splits a Pair of Games on Sunday

CLERMONT, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (7-8) bounced back from a five-inning run-rule 8-0 loss to St. Thomas to beat Colby College, 4-1.

Payton Mix (New London, Wis./New London) had two hits and drove in two runs in the game two victory. Sydney Opdahl (Greenfield, Wis./Whitnall) added a hit and a RBI and Rachael Wakefield (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) contributed hit in each game.

Game 1 – UWSP 0, St. Thomas 8
The Pointers were unable to score off Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, Wis./Kaukauna)'s two-out double in the top of the first.

St. Thomas wasted no time, posting five runs in the bottom half of the frame on four hits and two UWSP errors.

Tatum Tackmier (Ashwaubenon, WIs./Ashwaubenon) singled with one out in the second, but was left stranded.

The Tommies extended their lead in the second inning adding two more runs on two hits.

The Pointers got a leadoff single by Wakefield in the fifth inning, but a fielder's choice and a double play ended the threat.

St. Thomas scored their eighth run in the fifth inning resulting in a run-rule win. Back-to-back singles and a sacrifice bunt put runners in scoring position. An RBI infield single by the Tommies ended the game.

Sophomore Ashley Cohen (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South) took the loss, pitching 4.2 innings, giving up 10 hits and 6 earned runs.

Game 2 – UWSP 4, Colby 1
The Pointers got on the board first in the second inning. Natalie Coash (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) pinch ran for Alyssa Cooper (Little Suamico, Wis./Bay Port), who was on first after being hit by the pitch. A fielding error by the second baseman allowed Coash to score. Tackmier, taking third on the previous play, scored on a Sydney Opdahl (Greenfield, Wis./Whitnall) RBI double to center.

UWSP scored two more runs in the fourth inning. Back-to-back singles by Anna Palicka (Lisle, Ill./Lisle) and Wakefield put runners on first and second. A fielder's choice and a wild pitch moved runners into scoring position. Mix singled both runs home, extending the score to 4-0.

A last ditch seventh inning effort saw the Mules fall short. They scored one run on two hits and left two base runners stranded.

Freshman Anna Palicka (Lisle, Ill./Lisle) got the win, scattering four hits and one run, while striking out eight.

The Pointers face Loras at 9:00 a.m. ET, Buffalo State at 11:30 a.m. ET and get a rematch against Luther College at 2:00 p.m. ET on Monday.
