Game Recap: Softball |

UWSP Softball Wins Twice on Monday

CLERMONT, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (9-9) won the first two games of the day before dropping the last to Luther on Monday. The Pointers opened the day by beating Loras and Buffalo St, 2-1 and 4-1, respectively, and lost to Luther, 11-2.

The Pointers offense spread out 20 hits between ten different players in the three games. Paige Allen (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) had hits in every game, going 4-10 on the day and scored twice. Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, Wis./Kaukauna) added two hits, two RBI and one run, while Payton Mix (New London, Wis./New London) scored a run and had an RBI. Rachael Wakefield (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) also contributed two hits, one RBI and one run on the day.

Game 1 – UWSP 2, Loras 1
The Pointer turned a third-inning leadoff double from Wakefield into the game's first run. She scored on a fielding error by the shortstop.

Loras responded by tying the game in the next frame on three hits.

The score remained locked until the Pointers pushed across the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth. Leadoff singles by Mix and Johnson put runners on first and second. A sacrifice bunt by Alyssa Cooper (Little Suamico, Wis./Bay Port) moved runners into scoring position. After a walk loaded the bases, a fielder's choice at the plate became the second out of the inning. Johnson scored the winning run on a passed ball.

Sophomore Ashley Cohen (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South) earned the win, coming into close out the final two innings of the game.

Game 2 – UWSP 4, Buffalo St 1
UWSP got on the board first in the third inning. Sydney Opdahl (Greenfield, Wis./Whitnall) led off and singled down the left field line. A sac bunt moved her to second and she then scored on a RBI double from Wakefield. Allen then singled, Mix doubled, and Johnson's double brought both runners home for a 3-0 lead.

The Pointers added one more run in the sixth to bring the score to 4-0. Natalie Coash (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) pinch ran for Cooper after she singled to right field. Coash stole second to move into scoring position and scored on Averi Kanyuh (Rapid River, Wis./Rapid River)'s pinch-hit RBI single.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Bengals scored one run, breaking up the shutout.

Cohen got her second win of the day, pitching six strong innings.  She gave up six hits, one run, and struck out four.

Game 3 – UWSP 2, Luther 11
Luther struck first in the top of the third, scoring one run on three hits.

UWSP took the lead in the bottom half of the frame. Opdahl singled to start the inning. One batter later, Wakefield walked and Allen singled, loading the bases. Mix hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Opdahl. A throwing error by the third baseman allowed Allen to score and the Pointers to take the lead.

The Norse got the lead right back when they scored two runs on four hits and one error in the fourth.

A big fifth inning for the Norse broke the game wide open. Eleven batters came to the plate in the frame, plating six runs on five hits and a couple of walks.

Luther continued to put up runs, adding two more in the seventh for an 11-2 lead.

UWSP is back in action on Wednesday for another triple header.  The Pointers face Wellesley (9:00 a.m. ET), Mount Mary University (11:30 a.m. ET) and St. Olaf at (2:00 p.m. ET) in Clermont.
