UWSP Baseball Splits Twin Bill Versus No. 11 W&J

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team split a pair of games against No. 11 Washington and Jefferson. In the opening game, the Presidents pulled out the extra-inning walk-off win, 5-4. Two three-run innings propelled the Pointers to a 6-0 win in the second game.
 
Tommy Duddleston (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle Institute) collected five hits on the day, four in the first game, and he scored three runs. Ryan Stanicek (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Catholic) added four hits, scored three runs and drove in two. Will Iloncaie had a pair of hits in each game, while scoring twice and he drove in a run.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 4, Wash. & Jeff. 5
The Presidents got on the board first in the bottom of the second with a double and a RBI single.
 
UWSP answered back in the next frame with a run of their own. Back-to-back singles by Bradley Hansen (Racine, Wis. /Union Grove) and Duddleston put runners on first and second. Duddleston scored on an RBI single from Stanicek.
 
Leading off the top of the sixth, Stanicek tripled to right center. He scored on a Kyle Mrozinski (Ashwaubenon, Wis./Ashwaubenon) sacrifice fly, giving the Pointers a one-run advantage.
 
The Pointers added two more runs in the seventh on two hits and two errors. Duddleston singled and stole second. Stanicek reached on a dropped fly by the catcher that allowed Duddleston to score. Stanicek then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Mrozinski picked up his second RBI of the game when Stanicek scored on his double.
 
Wash. & Jeff. starting staging their comeback in the eighth. They cut into the run deficit and added one run on one hit.
 
In the ninth, Drew Spaeth (Stratford, Wis./Stratford) came on to pitch for Cole Erickson (Deerfield, Wis./Deerfield). The Presidents tied the game at 4-4 with a two-run dinger over the right-centerfield wall.
 
In the bottom half of the 10th, Wash. & Jeff. led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After taking third on a foul out to right field, the Presidents scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly.
 
Erickson pitched 8.0 innings with six strikeouts.  He allowed just five hits and a pair of runs.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 6, Wash. & Jeff. 0
UWSP broke the scoreless tie in the fourth and took a 3-0 lead. An error and an infield single put runners on first and second. With two outs in the inning, Iloncaie singled through the right side and to score Nelson. A throwing error by the pitcher plated two more runs for the Pointers.
 
Iloncaie led the seventh inning off with a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the third baseman. Two batters later, back-to-back RBI singles by Hansen and Duddleston scored two runs for the Pointers. Stanicek plated the third run of the inning with an RBI single.
 
Pointers' pitcher Nathan Mulzer (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) scattered three hits over seven innings pitched and earned the win.
 
UWSP will face Union on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. ET.
