STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (11-11, 5-6) jumped out to a 20-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back in an 85-41 win over UW-Platteville (6-16, 2-9) on Wednesday night. The win secured a spot in the WIAC Tournament for the Pointers.
Five UWSP players scored in double figures, led by senior
Taylor Barrett (Monroe, Wis./Monroe) with 12 points.
Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) scored 11 points with
Kellan Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton),
Ashley Leiterman (Morrison, Wis./Denmark) and
Olivia Pawlak (Lindenhurst, Ill./Lakes Community) chipping in 10 points each.
Pawlak's 10 points were a career high as she went 4-for-4 at the free throw line. Freshman
Erin Moran (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) also scored a career-best with seven points on 2-of-2 shooting from behind the arc.
Both teams started out slow on offense with
Brooke Geier (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) scoring the only two points in the first four minutes of the game. Cerrato took the lid off with a three-pointer and UWSP took a 15-0 lead before UWP got on the board with 1:46 left in the quarter.
Mickey Roland (New London, Wis./New London) capped a 20-2 first quarter with a three-pointer at the buzzer.
Geier completed an and-1 to push the lead to 23-2. Cerrato hit a three four minutes in and the lead grew to 23.
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) hit from deep and Barrett pushed the advantage to 30 as UWSP was ahead 44-14 at the half.
Schmidt scored UWSP's first four points of the second half as the lead remained 30. With 4:20 left in the third,
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) scored to spark a 13-2 run to end the period as UWSP was ahead 40 after three.
Moran nailed a pair of threes in the fourth and Schmidt completed an and-1. Leiterman scored the final five points for UWSP as the game was never in question.
The Pointers set out on a two-game road trip starting at UW-Stout on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
