SUPERIOR, Wis. — Junior forward Tanner Karty (Oklahoma City, OK/) netted a pair of goals as UWSP held on to defeat UW-Superior 4-2 on Saturday evening at Wessman Arena.
With one-second remaining in regulation, Karty buried an empty net goal to secure the UW-Stevens Point (17-4-2, 5-0-1 WIAC) victory over UW-Superior (9-12-2, 2-3-1 WIAC).
In the first period, Jerry Miettunen gave the Yellowjackets an early 1-0 lead, scoring 2:31 into the open frame.
At 12:51 of the opening frame, the Pointers responded with a goal from freshman forward Colin Raver (Bartlett, IL/), who picked up his first of three points on the night.
Just 3:19 later, Karty tallied his first goal of the game to give the Pointers a 2-1 lead concluding the first period.
Midway through the middle period, Austin Kelly (Toledo, OH/) tallied his third goal of the season in what would prove to be the game-winning tally.
With 1:33 remaining in regulation, Connor Hamonic put the Yellowjackets within striking distance before Karty sealed the victory for UWSP.
Max Milosek (Lapeer, MI/) recorded 15 saves in goal for the Pointers.
With the win, the Pointers have secured home ice in the WIAC Tournament and can secure the WIAC regular season championship with a win or a tie at UW-Stout next weekend.
The Pointers travel to UW-Stout on Friday (Feb. 9) before returning home to take on UW-Eau Claire in the regular season finale on Feb. 10. Saturday night's contest will also feature the team's annual Skate with the Pointers event sponsored by U.S. Bank.
