HOLLAND, Mich. – The No. 6 ranked UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (5-1) faced its first extended adversity of the year, but rallied for an 82-74 win at Hope College (4-3) on Saturday night.
Senior
Drew Fredrickson (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) poured in a career-high 20 points and made six three-pointers, also a career-best, in the win. Five of his three-pointers came in the second half as UWSP rallied from an 11-point deficit.
Fellow senior
Canon O'Heron (Bangor, Wis./Bangor) scored a game-high 23 points and added nine rebounds.
Ethan Bublitz (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) contributed 19 points and also had nine boards.
Fredrickson opened the game with a three just 18 seconds into the game.
Nate Dodge (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) made six of the next eight UWSP points as the Pointers extended the lead to five at 11-6. Midway through the half, O'Heron dominated the inside with three-straight made buckets as UWSP remained in front.
The Pointers went back to O'Heron with 6:26 left in the half for a 26-22 lead. At the 4:10 mark,
Aaron Knez (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls) made a layup, but UWSP was held scoreless the remainder of the half as Hope went ahead 40-32 at the break.
The Flying Dutchmen scored five early points to put UWSP behind by 11 before Fredrickson reignited. His three at the 18:29 mark sparked an 8-2 run as the Pointers quickly got within five. Bublitz and Fredrickson each hit a three as UWSP got within a possession near the midpoint of the second half.
Fredrickson nailed another three at 9:23 to give the Pointers their first lead of the second half at 61-60. He hit consecutive threes as UWSP went up 71-67. In the final minute of play, Dodge drilled a three to push the lead to seven at 78-71 as the Pointers closed out the win.
UWSP returns home to face Ripon College on Wednesday (Dec. 12). Tip-off at Quandt Fieldhouse is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
