STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team (5-4-1) saw visiting Marian (3-7-2) scored twice in the third period and hold on for a 2-1 win over the Pointers.
After a scoreless first period, sophomore
Cassie Newcomer (McFarland, Wis./Madison Capitols) put the Pointers in front at 9:30 of the second period. She buried a feed from senior
Lauren Smith (Antigo, Wis./Antigo), who recorded her team-best ninth point of the season.
In the third period, Marian tied the game at 4:58 of the period after a scramble in front of the net. Later in the period, the Sabres scored a second time to take the lead.
The Pointers pressed the final 11 minutes of the period, but were unable to put home the equalizer.
Mackenzie Kratch (Waconia, Minn./Waconia) led UWSP with five shots and
Dani Heitsman (Janesville, Wis./Rock County Fury) added four.
Freshman goaltender Oliva Schultz made 18 saves for the Pointers. Marian goaltender Lindsey Strainis stopped 31 UWSP shots.
The Pointers remain at home on Friday (Dec. 7) to face Augsburg. The puck drops at Ice Hawks Arena at 7:00 p.m.
