Women’s Hockey Falls to Marian on Pair of Third-Period Goals

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team (5-4-1) saw visiting Marian (3-7-2) scored twice in the third period and hold on for a 2-1 win over the Pointers.

After a scoreless first period, sophomore Cassie Newcomer (McFarland, Wis./Madison Capitols) put the Pointers in front at 9:30 of the second period.  She buried a feed from senior Lauren Smith (Antigo, Wis./Antigo), who recorded her team-best ninth point of the season.

In the third period, Marian tied the game at 4:58 of the period after a scramble in front of the net.  Later in the period, the Sabres scored a second time to take the lead.

The Pointers pressed the final 11 minutes of the period, but were unable to put home the equalizer.  Mackenzie Kratch (Waconia, Minn./Waconia) led UWSP with five shots and Dani Heitsman (Janesville, Wis./Rock County Fury) added four.

Freshman goaltender Oliva Schultz made 18 saves for the Pointers.  Marian goaltender Lindsey Strainis stopped 31 UWSP shots.
