RIPON, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (3-4) suffered through a 12-minute first half drought and staged a furious comeback attempt, but the 21-point deficit was too much in the end in a 56-48 loss at Ripon (4-7).
Freshman
Amber Baehman (Plainfield, Wis. /Tri-County) led the Pointers with 13 points, her fifth game of the season in double figures. She added eight rebounds.
Sophomore
Kellan Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) scored nine points. Fellow sophomore
Brooke Geier (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) contributed nine rebounds and three assists.
Baehman and Schmidt combined for the first seven UWSP points as the Pointers were within 8-7 at the midpoint of the first quarter. The Pointers would not score again until Geier drained a three-pointer with 3:02 remaining in the first half.
Erin Moran (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) scored the final four points as UWSP went into the half down 32-14.
Baehman scored UWSP's first six points in the third, but the Pointers still trailed by 19.
Jessica Slowik (Elcho, Wis./Elcho) drilled a three to spark a 10-0 run to end the third as UWSP pulled to within 39-30.
Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) hit a pair of triples early in the fourth as UWSP got within seven. Baehman made a bucket and got a steal as the Pointers made it 49-45, but that's the closest the game would get as Ripon hit 7-of-8 free throws to hold off UWSP.
The Pointers return to action tomorrow (Dec. 15) with a 7:00 p.m. tip-off at St. Norbert.
