STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (3-3) got career-highs from freshman
Amber Baehman (Plainfield, Wis. /Tri-County) and sophomore
Brooke Geier (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) to scratch out a 70-67 win over North Central (2-6) on Tuesday.
Baehman scored a game-high 24 points and snagged nine rebounds to narrowly miss her third double-double of the season. She made 11-of-14 shots from the field for UWSP.
Geier scored a career-best 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting. She added seven rebounds.
Baehman scored the first five points of the game for UWSP, but NCC stayed with the Pointers early.
Erin Nyhus (Brodhead, Wis./Brodhead) drilled a three to push the lead to 12-7. Geier hit another three, the last make of the game from behind the arc for UWSP, but the Cardinals closed the first on a 9-2 run to take the lead, 24-20.
Baehman scored six of the first eight UWSP points in the second quarter as UWSP tried to erase a seven-point deficit. The Pointers did just that with 13-straight points to gain a 37-31 advantage. Again NCC finished the quarter strong with a 7-2 run, but UWSP was ahead at the half, 39-38.
The second half began with four-straight points by Baehman. Following a basket by NCC, UWSP reeled off 12-straight points for a 55-40 lead.
Erin Moran (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) made a bucket later in the period, but the Cardinals closed to within nine at 61-52 after three.
Baehman snapped a more than seven minute drought at 5:24 of the fourth to keep UWSP in front, 63-60. Back-to-back baskets by Baehman pushed the lead back to seven, but NCC crept with two a 69-67 in the final minute. Geier hit the first of two free throws and UWSP held on for the three-point win.
UWSP heads out on the road for back-to-back non-conference games this weekend. The Pointers play at Ripon on Friday (Dec. 14) at 6:00 p.m. before facing St. Norbert on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
