STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 4 UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (4-1) had no trouble in a 79-36 win over visiting UW-Superior (1-6) on Saturday.
Senior
Nate Dodge (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) led all players with 23 points on 5-of-6 shooting from three-point range. Sophomore
Garrett Nelson (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) and fellow senior
Drew Fredrickson (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) were also in double figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Dodge completed an and-one to spark a 7-0 run as UWSP erased the only deficit of the game. Dodge hit his first triple of the game to set off another 7-0 run as UWSP took the lead, 17-7. Back-to-back threes by Dodge gave the Pointers a 23-10 advantage at the midpoint of the first half.
Nelson scored six points in a 10-point spurt by the Pointers as the lead grew to 33-12. Fredrickson nailed a three as UWSP closed the half on a 10-4 run for a 43-16 lead at the break.
Dodge scored UWSP's first six points of the second half to push the lead to 49-18. Nelson completed an and-one near the middle of the second half making it 57-28 in favor of the Pointers.
Down the stretch, UWSP's defense wrapped up a dominating win without allowing a field goal over the final 8:54 of the game. During that stretch, the Pointers out-scored UWS 18-3.
The Pointers travel to Michigan next Saturday (Dec. 8) to battle Hope College. Tip-off in Holland is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Central.
