Schmidt’s Late Basket Backs Baehman Double-Double in Pointers’ Win

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (2-0) completed an unblemished weekend with a 72-69 win over Luther (0-2) in the UWSP Tip-Off Classic on Saturday.

Freshman Amber Baehman (Plainfield, Wis. /Tri-County) recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Pointers.

Sophomore Brooke Geier (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) led the Pointers with 15 points, five assists and three steals. She also snagged four boards.  Fellow sophomores Taylor Greenheck (Sauk Prairie, Wis./Sauk Prairie) and Kellan Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) were also in double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively.  Schmidt's final two points broke a 69-69 tie with 4.4 seconds remaining.

The Pointers dug out of an early 6-0 hole with 11-straight points, including five from Geier.  A late basket by Erin Moran (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) gave UWSP a 15-13 lead at the end of the first.

Bailee Collins (Milton, Wis./Milton) scored early in the second quarter, but neither team was able to generate much offense from the field.  Baehman and Schmidt had a bucket apiece as the remainder of UWSP's five point came from the free throw line.  Despite the cold shooting from the floor, the Pointers trailed by just two, 28-26, at the half.

The Norse countered four early points from Baehman with a 6-0 run to take a 42-32 lead.  Schmidt, Greenheck and Geier combined for all 10 points as UWSP tied the game at 42-42.

The fourth quarter began tied and remained a one-possession game down the stretch.  A Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) three gave UWSP a 52-51 lead.  Two free throws by Collins extended the advantage to four midway through the period.  As the final minute began, Greenheck buried a three for a 69-66 lead.  LC answered with the tripe to tie the game.  After missed shots at both ends of the court, the Pointers inbounded with six second remaining.  Schmidt drilled a turnaround jumper and UWSP sealed the win with a pair of steals in the closing seconds.

UWSP hits the road to face Lakeland on Tuesday (Nov. 20).  Tip-off in Plymouth is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
