STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (1-0) had little trouble in an 87-56 season-opening win over Dubuque (1-1) on the opening day of the UWSP Tip-Off Classic.
Freshman
Amber Baehman (Plainfield, Wis. /Tri-County) led all scorers with 17 points for UWSP. Sophomores
Brooke Geier (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) and
Taylor Greenheck (Sauk Prairie, Wis./Sauk Prairie) added 13 points each. Geier also led UWSP with nine rebounds.
The visiting Spartans got on the board in the opening minute for a brief 2-0 lead. Baehman answered a minute later with her first-career basket and completed the and-one for a 3-2 lead. UWSP poured in 16 of the next 17 points over a six-minute span to open an 18-3 lead. Threes by Geier and
Erin Moran (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) helped UWSP to a 27-13 advantage after one quarter.
Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) began the second quarter with a three-pointer. She added another from behind the arc and the Pointers took a 43-30 lead into halftime.
Baehman scored six-straight for UWSP to start the third. Greenheck went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe late in the quarter as the lead stood at 66-42 heading to the fourth.
Greenheck buried a pair of threes in the fourth as the lead extended to 25. Freshmen
Erin Nyhus (Brodhead, Wis./Brodhead) and
Jessica Slowik (Elcho, Wis./Elcho) hit threes and fellow freshman
Jordyn Ellis (Winneconne, Wis./Winneconne) scored six points down the stretch in the win.
The Pointers face Luther College on Saturday (Nov. 17) at 1:00 p.m. in game three of the UWSP Tip-Off Classic.
