Fond Du Lac, Wis. – The top-ranked UW-Stevens Point Pointers (6-0-1) took down the No. 11/7 Marian Sabres (4-1-0), 5-2, giving Marian their first loss of the season.
The Pointers took an early 1-0 lead at the 3:19 mark in the first period on goal by
Zach Zech (South Lyon, Mich.) off a pass by
Tanner Karty (Oklahoma City, Okla.).
Sophomore
Carter Roo (Champlin, Minn.) doubled the Pointers' lead at 10:55 with a power-play goal getting set up by his brother, TJ and
Danny Kiraly (Glendale, Ariz.).
Marian pulled within a goal at 1:34 into the second period with a goal from Nick Monfils.
The Sabres' Jake Howie tied the game, 2-2, scoring a shorthanded break-away goal at 10:38 in the second.
With seven minutes left in the game and the momentum in Marian's favor, UWSP scored three goals in a span of four minutes to take a 5-2 lead.
Junior Kiraly broke the tie at 13:38 in the third period, putting the Pointers up, 3-2. He scored from the blue line off assists by Karty and Zech.
Colin Raver (Bartlett, Ill.) increased the lead, 4-2, 45 seconds later, picking up his first career shorthanded goal, the assist going to
Baxter Kanter (Lincoln, Neb.).
The Pointers got an insurance empty-net goal from Raver at the 18:21 mark of the third to seal the 5-2 win.
Connor Ryckman (Minesing, Ont.) improved to 6-0-0, making 27 saves. Marian's Hunter Vorva took the loss and made 25 saves in the game.
UWSP is back on the road on Saturday (Nov. 17) to take on No. 3/4 St. Norbert in De Pere. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
