SUPERIOR, Wis. – Senior
Mackenzie Kratch (Waconia, Minn./Waconia) scored three times in the third period to record her first career hat trick and helped the UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team (3-3-0, 1-1-0) pick up its first league win, 5-4, over UW-Superior (2-5-0, 0-2-0) on Friday.
Freshman
Dani Heitsman (Janesville, Wis./Rock County Fury) opened the scoring just 4:08 into the game. Fellow freshman
Sophie Regovic (Naperville, Ill./Chicago Mission) and sophomore
Cassie Newcomer (McFarland, Wis./Madison Capitols) assisted on the goal as the Pointers held a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
The middle period belonged to the home standing Yellowjackets. Three tallies, including a goal with just two seconds left in the period gave UWS a 3-1 advantage after two periods.
Kratch began a UWSP comeback with a power-play tally just 1:29 into the third period.
Mary Kremer (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead Warhawks) and
Maddie Monroe (Aurora, Ill./Batavia) assisted on the goal. Thirty-six second later, Kratch tallied her second of the game to knot the score at 3-3. Fellow senior
Cara Lemirande (Janesville, Wis./Madison Capitols) and junior
Alex Grubbs (Minong, Wis./Spooner) added helpers.
Cheney gave the Pointers a 4-3 lead with her first career goal at the 6:54 mark. Regovic picked up her second assist of the game.
Kratch finished the hat trick at 16:47 of the third as Regovic added her third assist. The Yellowjackets pulled one back with a shorthanded tally in the final minute.
Senior goaltender
Sydney Conley (South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul) made 37 saves in the win. UWS goaltender Catherine Johnson stopped 18 UWSP shots.
The Pointers and Yellowjackets wrap up the weekend series on Saturday (Nov. 17) at 2:00 p.m.
