NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team (1-0-0) opened the 2018-19 with a 4-1 victory at St. Olaf (0-1-0) on Friday night.
Freshman
Dani Heitsman (Janesville, Wis./Rock County Fury) netted her first career goal to give the Pointers a 1-0 lead late int eh first period.
Cassie Newcomer (McFarland, Wis./Madison Capitols) and
Lauren Smith (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) added helpers on the tally.
The homestanding Oles evened the game at 1-1 just over two minutes into the second period.
Late in the second period,
Cara Lemirande (Janesville, Wis./Madison Capitols) put UWSP back in front with her first of the year. Freshman
Anna Cheney (New Brighton, Mich./Irondale) picked up her first career point with an assist on the goal that would stand as the game-winner.
At the 17:59 mark,
Sophie Regovic (Naperville, Ill./Chicago Mission) upped the lead to 3-1 with an unassisted goal, the first of her career.
The lead stood at 3-1 until late in the third.
Alex Grubbs (Minong, Wis./Spooner) picked up her first goal of the year on an assist from Lemirande for the 4-1 win.
Senior goaltender
Sydney Conley (South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul) had 23 saves int eh win for UWSP. The Pointers fired 28 shots on St. Olaf goaltender Sam Klemann.
The Pointers and Oles close out the weekend set on Saturday (Oct. 27) with a 2:00 p.m. puck drop in Northfield.
