STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The second-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (1-0-0) won the opening game of the 2018-19 season against Aurora, 4-2.
Junior
Kelly O'Brien (Detroit, Mich.) got the scoring started one minute and 24 seconds into the opening period for the first Pointers' goal of the season.
Fellow junior
Logan Fredericks (Millstone Township, N.J.) picked up his first goal of the season, crashing the net and putting in the rebound off a shot from junior
Brennen Miller (Keller, Texas) for a 2-0 lead at 11:35 in the second period.
With three minutes and 30 seconds remaining in the second,
TJ Roo (Champlin, Minn.) extended the Pointers' lead to 3-0, scoring his first goal in a Pointers' uniform on the power play.
Aurora (0-1-0) got on the board with 1:51 remaining in the second with a goal from Lordanthony Grissom.
Junior
Luke McElhenie (Sauk City, Wis.) scored unassisted off a faceoff draw at 4:37 in the third period to put the Pointers up 4-1.
Halfway through the third, the Spartans' Chris Nowacki tallied their second goal of the night.
Sophomore goaltender
Connor Ryckman (Minesing, Ont.) picked up the win, recording 22 saves. Josh Boyko made 29 saves for Aurora. UWSP finished 1-for-3 on the man advantage.
The Pointers play again Saturday (Oct. 27) against Trine at home. Puck drops at 7:00 p.m. at K.B. Willett Arena.
