STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team (12-2-2, 5-0-1) remained unbeaten in conference play with a 3-0 win over visiting UW-Platteville (8-8-0, 2-4-0) on Sunday. The win assures the Pointers a first round bye in the WIAC Championships with a chance to win the regular season title next week against UW-La Crosse.
The Pointers got on the board in the 17th minute as freshman
Jacqueline Aleman (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) headed home a corner kick served in by
Nora Hargett (Columbia, Mo./Hickman).
The lead grew to 2-0 in the 30th minute as fellow freshman
Bridget Kauzlaric (Coal City, Ill./Coal City) buried a close-range shot after a fumbled save by the UWP keeper.
Maddy Hardyman (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing) got the assist as her original shot was too strong for the keeper to cleanly handle.
In the 34th minute,
Bri Widmer (Weston, Wis./D.C. Everest) drilled a free kick from about 35 yards out straight into the lower right corner of the net. It was her first goal as a Pointer and gave UWSP a 3-0 lead.
The Pointers' defense clamped down on the Pioneers and WIAC leading scorer Caelyn Steffens. UWSP allowed just one shot in the match and sophomore goalkeeper
Lexi Pawlowski (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) was untested in the shutout win.
UWSP closes out the regular season on Saturday (Oct. 27) at 1:00 p.m. against UW-La Crosse. A win by the Pointers secures a regular season conference title.
