ST. PAUL, Minn.-The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team (6-5-1) fell to Hamline University (9-2-1) by a 5-2 score on Saturday in St. Paul.
Lauren Smith (Antigo, WI/Antigo) led the Pointers with a two-point game, with a goal and an assist.
Hamline's Darby Dodds put the Pipers on the board breaking the scoring just 35 seconds into the first period. Hamline continued to hold off the Pointers tallying goals at 6:39 and 14:54 in the first period.
Smith put the puck past the Hamline goaltender getting the Pointers on the board nine minutes into the second period, her first goal of the season. The junior defender's goal included assists from
Maddie Monroe (Aurora, IL/Batavia) and
Cassie Newcomer (McFarland, WI/Madison Capitols).
Cara Lemirande (Janesville, WI/Madison Capitols) cut the deficit to two goals in the third period. Lemirande's goal came 51 seconds into the period, off the feed from Smith. Lemirande's goal ties her for team lead in goals.
Later in the third period, the Pipers found the back to close out the scoring.
Lisa Fowle (Wausau, WI/Wausau West) and
Marit Larson (Oakdale, MN/North St. Paul) shared time in the net. Fowle stopped four shots while Larson stopped 20 shots. Hamline's goaltender McKenna Hulslander stopped 35.
The Pointers travel to De Pere, Wis., to take on St. Norbert on Tuesday (Jan. 9) at 7:00 p.m. UWSP returns home on Jan. 12 and 13 to host Aurora University at Ice Hawks Arena.
