STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 4/5 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team tallied five goals in the first period to power past St. Olaf, 7-1, on Saturday night at K.B. Willet Arena.
In the first period, freshman
Zach Zech (South Lyon, MI) got UWSP (12-3-2) rolling, tallying a power -play goal 3:16 into the opening frame.
Four minutes later,
Luke McElhenie (Sauk City, WI) tallied his first goal of the night, giving the Pointers a two-goal lead on St. Olaf (6-6-0).
At 9:26 of the first period,
Colin Raver (Bartlett, IL) extended the UWSP lead, recording a power-play goal. He was set up by
Drew McLean (Waterford, MI/) and
Stephan Beauvais (Shelby Township, MI/) on the play.
With less than three minutes remaining in the opening period,
Steven Quagliata (Bartlett, IL) and Zech tallied back-to-back goals in the span of 37 seconds to put UWSP up 5-0.
Following a scoreless second period, McElhenie tallied his second goal of the game 7:49 into the final period to put the Pointers up 6-0.
Midway through the third, Tuuka Totro tallied a power-play goal for St. Olaf to cut UWSP lead five.
Logan Fredericks (Millstone Township, NJ/) capped the Pointers scoring at the 12:43 mark of the final frame.
Max Milosek (Lapeer, MI/) and
P.J. Bridges (Waterford, MI/) combined for 20 saves in the victory.
UW-Stevens Point closes out non-conference play next weekend, traveling to Augsburg and Saint John's on Jan. 12 and 13.
