WHITEWATER, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (9-11, 3-6) saw a one-point lead heading to the fourth quarter dissipate in a 71-54 loss at No. 19 UW-Whitewater (17-3, 7-2) on Wednesday.
Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) and
Mickey Roland (New London, Wis./New London) each scored in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Roland had a team-high eight rebounds to go with four assists and two steals. Cerrato snagged a team-best three steals with four boards.
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) and
Kellan Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) contributed nine points each. Roland had five rebounds and Schmidt grabbed four boards.
Schmidt hit a three-pointer to give UWSP the early 3-2 edge. Midway through the first,
Brooke Geier (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) drained a three to tie the game at 6-6. In the closing minute of the period,
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) made UWSP's third shot from behind the arc and the Pointers were down just two after one.
Cerrato and
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) each hit a three early in the second to keep the Pointers close. Cerrato later swished a jumper to give the lead back to UWSP, 24-23.
Mickey Roland (New London, Wis./New London) scored twice in the final minute to give the Pointers a 30-29 halftime lead.
All three seniors scored early in the third, but UWW matched each basket to tie the game at 36-36. In the middle of the quarter, Cerrato hit another three to begin a stretch of six-consecutive points by the sophomore.
Olivia Pawlak (Lindenhurst, Ill./Lakes Community) scored in the closing seconds as UWSP maintained a one-point advantage heading to the fourth.
Schmidt and
Ashley Leiterman (Morrison, Wis./Denmark) scored nearly eight minutes apart as the Warhawks out-scored the Pointers 22-4 in the fourth quarter to put away the win.
The Pointers conclude a two-game road trip with a visit to UW-River Falls on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
