STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (9-10, 3-5) used a 15-point run in the first quarter to jump out to a double-digit lead in an eventual 73-54 win over visiting UW-La Crosse (12-7, 5-3) on Saturday afternoon.
Senior
Taylor Barrett (Monroe, Wis./Monroe) led the Pointers with 16 points. She tied for the team-lead with eight rebounds and added two assists and two blocks.
Fellow seniors
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) and
Mickey Roland (New London, Wis./New London) were also in double figures with 12 and 10, respectively.
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) grabbed eight boards with two assists and a steal.
Mickey Roland (New London, Wis./New London) dished out six assists, snagged seven rebounds and a steal.
Freshman
Taylor Greenheck (Sauk Prairie, Wis./Sauk Prairie) scored a career-high nine points. She added two rebounds, an assist, a block and a steal.
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) drove to the basket and scored in the opening seconds to give UWSP a lead. Two minutes later,
Mickey Roland (New London, Wis./New London) buried a three to stop a 7-0 run by UWL. Following an Eagles' bucket at 6:51, UWSP put up 15-straight points capped by a
Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) three-pointer to take a 20-9 lead. Greenheck nailed a three to close out the quarter with the Pointers in front, 23-13.
Barrett scored five of UWSP's 10 points in a 10-2 run over the first eight minutes of the second quarter.
Brooke Geier (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) scored four points down the stretch as the lead stood at 38-20 at the half.
The lead grew to 20 following a Barrett jumper in the opening minute of the third.
Mickey Roland (New London, Wis./New London) completed an and-1 with 2:42 to go in the stanza for a 51-28 advantage. Greenheck finished an and-1 to give the Pointers a 58-37 lead heading to the fourth.
Barrett scored UWSP's first three points of the fourth, but UWL cut the lead to 14 with just under seven to go. Following a Cerrato bucket, the Pointers hit 8-of-10 free throws to secure the victory.
The Pointers travel to UW-Whitewater on Wednesday (Jan. 31) for a 7:00 p.m. tip versus the Warhawks.
